FIRI (Fasting Insulin Resistance Index) and HOMA-IR are both calculated scores used to estimate how sensitive your body is to insulin using a fasting blood sample. They combine your fasting glucose and fasting insulin levels to give an idea of how hard your body is working to keep blood sugar under control. If your body needs to produce more insulin to maintain normal glucose levels, this can suggest insulin resistance.
The two measures assess the same concept but use slightly different formulas:
- HOMA-IR = (fasting insulin × fasting glucose) ÷ 22.5
- FIRI = (fasting insulin × fasting glucose) ÷ 25
(Both use fasting insulin in µU/mL and fasting glucose in mmol/L.)
In simple terms, you can think of FIRI and HOMA-IR as two slightly different ways of calculating the same picture of insulin sensitivity.
HOMA-IR and Fasting Insulin Resistance index measurements are not the same.
